Subway Tiles

Subway tile was originally developed for and used on the walls of New York City’s Subway stations at the beginning of the 20th century. With its pencil-thin grout lines, flat surface, and coved corners, it was easy to clean and to remove graffiti, so it got the name "sanitary-ware." The aesthetic of subway tile embodied the clean and sanitized sensibilities of the Victorian era, so soon it became popular throughout the USA in both commercial spaces and residential housing. Since that time, subway tile has become a classic style around the world. Influenced by the Art Deco, Arts & Crafts, and Art Nouveau movements of the-mid-1920s, subway tiles evolved, offering different finish options, color, pattern, and decorative styles.
